Strategies For Effective Lesson Planning

TEFL classroom

Planning your lesson plan is must as it is the only way to ensure that your educational objectives are attained. Planning starts with strategizing ways about how you would like your students to approach their learning, and know or be able to do tasks by the end of the learning session. It does not matter whether you are planning a subject for the first time, or revising your existing subject, it is important to keep in mind, effects of your teaching and assessment on your students' learning.

Lesson planning can be made effective with three components:

  1. Objective
  2. Body
  3. Reflection

Objective: The objective of the subject or the purpose of the lesson needs to more interesting so as to keep students engaging, like instead of saying “various causes of the war,” saying, “exploring various reasons of causing war” would create an interest in students’ mind.

Body: Once an active objective has been set, it is time to frame some open-ended questions, deciding various approaches of asking the students and planning ways of dealing with students who will not be able to answer the questions. These questions should allow students to think and discuss about various possibilities of arriving at conclusions. A teacher needs to be continually simplifying the lesson to keep students focused and attentive.

Reflection: Asking students about what they have learned academically as well as socially and getting their feedback on how far your lesson planning goals have been met and how teaching approach can be improved.

Different teaching approaches to plan effective lesson plans

  • Attention to recent trends and interests: Every teacher should be able to learn to speak the language understandable to kids. It helps to make the students understand things quick and respond in a creative manner. There is no doubt that integrating current or ongoing topics in the lesson plans are always important to draw the attention of the students and to keep them interested in the learning session. This will not only result in a more engaged classroom but also increase the levels of trust among students. Digital learning tools can support classroom learning subjects and topics.

  • Students involvement: Students must be given responsibilities in the classroom which will help them in learning real life skills. It is important for students to come up with different solutions to a question and for this time to process information is required. Hand on activities provides a practical experience and help create an environment in which all students have the equal opportunity to learn and explore the subjects in depth.

  • Encourage interaction: This strategy addresses how well students interact with one another in class. Through Cooperative and collaborative learning, students with varying levels of capability and understanding share responsibility and work in small groups to accomplish learning activities with the end result of improving overall understanding of a subject. This collaborative learning method helps in developing participative work habits and the role of a teacher here is to allow each one of the children to freely express his or her idea, views and discuss classroom activity in groups.

  • Bring experts into the classroom: Sometimes it may so happen that students feel bored and uninterested in the monotony of attending and listening to the same faculty speak day after day. One way to overcome this difficulty when tackling difficult lessons is to rely on the insight knowledge of an outside expert who would act as a Guest speaker offering students a refreshing change with a new perspective.

These four planning strategies help teachers manage their classrooms better, making difficult lesson plans easier and understandable to learners.
